Cambridge Mobile Telematics and The Kiefer Foundation Mark Five Years Fighting Distracted Driving
CMT returns as the presenting sponsor of the 2026 Swing for Safe Driving “Ball Golf” Outing, backing the Foundation's three pillars: awareness, policy, and technology
Cambridge, MA and Detroit, MI — May 6, 2026 — Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT), the world’s largest telematics and AI company for safer mobility, today announced it will return as the presenting sponsor of The Kiefer Foundation’s Swing for Safe Driving “Ball Golf” Outing for the fifth consecutive year, deepening a partnership built to end distracted driving on every front. The event, held May 11 at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, funds the Foundation’s work across its three pillars: awareness, policy, and technology.
The Kiefer Foundation was founded in 2016 in memory of 18-year-old Mitchel Kiefer, who was killed by a distracted driver on his way to college. Since then, the Foundation has built a national movement to end the deadly behavior by raising awareness in schools and communities, educating on the importance of hands-free laws through state legislatures, and advancing technology that helps drivers put their phones down.
Distracted driving killed at least 3,208 people on US roads in 2024, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a figure the agency acknowledges is significantly undercounted. A NHTSA analysis estimated the true toll at 12,405 deaths in 2021, or 28% of all traffic fatalities.
CMT has partnered with the Foundation since 2022, contributing to all three pillars. CMT’s road safety research arms awareness campaigns with hard numbers. Its real-time driving data shows lawmakers how hands-free legislation reduces distraction. And CMT-powered safe driving programs reach tens of millions of drivers, reducing risk behind the wheel.
The results in Michigan show what the model can do. Since the state’s hands-free law took effect on June 30, 2023, CMT data shows it has helped prevent over 17,000 crashes and 71 fatalities. The Kiefer Foundation has been proud to support efforts that educate on the importance of hands-free laws and safer driving behaviors.
“The Kiefer Family turned an unimaginable loss into a movement that’s changing how this country drives,” said William V. Powers, Co-Founder and CEO of CMT. “Through awareness, policy, and technology, they’ve built something that can save lives in every state. Michigan is the proof point: thousands of crashes prevented, dozens of families spared. CMT is proud to stand with them, and we won’t stop until the next generation grows up in a society where no family loses someone to a phone behind the wheel.”
“Every state that adopts a hands-free law is a win for every driver on that road,” said Steve Kiefer, Chairman of The Kiefer Foundation. “CMT’s data makes the impact clear. By sharing what we’ve seen in Michigan, we’re helping communities and decision-makers better understand how hands-free laws can save lives.”
The outing also supports the Foundation’s Just Drive Simulator, a virtual reality experience that lets participants experience the consequences of distracted driving firsthand. The simulator is deployed in schools and through injury prevention networks across the country, placing the Foundation’s awareness pillar directly in front of the drivers most at risk.
