Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance and Cambridge Mobile Telematics Partner to Launch AI-Powered Safe Driving Program to Improve Road Safety Across South Korea

Partnership builds on CMT’s momentum in Asia to advance driver safety in South Korea
July 29, 2025

July 29, 2025, Seoul, South Korea & Cambridge, MA — Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance (SFMI), South Korea’s leading insurer, today announced a strategic partnership with Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT), the world’s largest telematics provider. Following a comprehensive global evaluation by Samsung Financial C-Lab Outside, CMT was selected for its expertise in signal processing, mobility data harmonization, driving risk analytics, and crash detection. The partnership comes as CMT accelerates its expansion across Asia, bringing advanced AI, crash detection, and behavioral analytics to the region’s most urgent road safety challenges.

The collaboration marks a significant step forward in SFMI’s commitment to make South Korea’s roads safer by increasing safe driving awareness and providing life-saving help and roadside assistance after a vehicle crash.

“At Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, our mission is to protect our customers in every moment that matters, especially on the road,” said Jonghyeok Joo, Head of Customer Experience of SFMI. “We partnered with CMT because of their proven ability to improve driver behavior, reduce risk, and respond to crashes in real-time. By bringing this innovation to our customers, we’re not only helping to prevent accidents, we’re strengthening our commitment to safety, service, and peace of mind on South Korea’s roads.”

Over the past decade, South Korea has made notable progress in reducing road fatalities, achieving a record low of 2,735 deaths in 2022, a 6.2% decrease from 2021 and the tenth consecutive annual decline. However, serious risks remain. Individuals aged 75 and older have a road mortality rate nearly four times higher than the general population, and pedestrians account for 35% of all road deaths, one of the highest shares among the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. Distracted driving is widespread, with 42% of drivers admitting to phone use behind the wheel, with a 5% increase in distraction-related crashes in 2023. The economic impact is also significant: traffic accidents cost South Korea an estimated ₩20.8 trillion annually, or 1.3% of GDP.

SFMI’s partnership with CMT will put the world’s most advanced safe driving technology directly in the hands of South Korean drivers. CMT’s technology uses smartphone sensors and AI to detect and reduce distraction, build safer habits, and respond instantly to crashes. By giving drivers tools to avoid collisions and protect themselves in real time, SFMI is helping reduce injuries, save lives, and deliver a smarter, safer driving experience.

“South Korea has made great progress in reducing traffic deaths, and now we have the opportunity to help accelerate that momentum,” said William V. Powers, Co-Founder and CEO of Cambridge Mobile Telematics. “We’re expanding across Asia to make roads and drivers safer everywhere, and this partnership with Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance is a major step toward that vision. By combining our technology with Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance’s leadership in South Korea, we’re delivering the tools drivers need to stay safe, and scaling those tools to protect millions.”
