Cambridge Mobile Telematics Crosses 1 Million Drivers in Japan
Telematics adoption grows as drivers turn to data-driven safety and savings

July 1, 2025, Tokyo, Japan — Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT), the world’s largest telematics provider, announced today that it has surpassed one million drivers on its platform in Japan. Telematics adoption in Japan is accelerating, driven in part by CMT’s partnerships with insurers, automakers, and mobility providers.
CMT’s DriveWell Fusion® platform powers safe driving telematics programs across Japan. Developed by two MIT scientists, it harmonizes data from smartphones, connected vehicles, dashcams, and IoT devices to deliver AI-driven insights, crash detection, and real-time feedback. Drivers earn lower premiums and rewards for safer behavior, along with tools to improve risk driving.
Safe driving telematics programs have been proven to reduce accidents, even in a dashcam-dominant market like Japan. Japanese drivers are adopting these safe driving programs to get feedback, improve their driving, and stay safer on the road. To support growing demand, CMT opened a Tokyo office last August.
Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance, part of MS&AD Insurance Group — Japan’s largest insurer and a CMT partner, reported an 18% reduction in crash frequency and 10-point higher customer satisfaction among drivers using the platform. These results are similar worldwide.
“We’ve invested deeply in Japan, from the technology to our team, resulting in rapid growth,” said William V. Powers, Co-Founder and CEO of CMT. “Reaching one million drivers is a big milestone. It shows that safe driving programs are resonating and working. More drivers are seeing the value in safer roads, lower costs, and real-time support. With this scale, we’re generating insights that can help solve Japan’s toughest safety challenges, especially for senior drivers and high-risk conditions. We’re committed to growing in Japan and helping shape the country’s connected, data-driven mobility future.”
Japan’s driving fatality rate has been trending downward since the 1990s. However, progress has plateaued in recent years, with a minor uptick in 2023. Challenges such as a growing senior driving population and distracted driving are threatening to undo the significant strides in road safety. In 2024, phone-related crashes leading to fatalities or serious injuries reached 136, the highest on record since the National Police Agency (NPA) began measuring it in 2007. The NPA also reported that fatal crashes caused by drivers over 75 years have been increasing in recent years. In 2024, the proportion of single-vehicle crashes involving drivers over 75 was approximately 2.5 times higher than younger drivers.
Connected mobility, driven by AI-powered telematics and real-time insights, is rapidly developing nationwide as an effective tool not only for insurance companies, but also for public sector organizations as they struggle with mobility challenges from an aging population, depopulating rural areas, and digital distractions for drivers.
With over one million drivers on its platform in Japan, CMT can provide broad-scale analyses and insights on driving safety nationwide. From comparing regional distraction trends to predicting crash hotspots, to mapping safer routes to school, CMT helps road safety planners and insurers reduce risk, design safer roads, and build smarter transportation systems.
