Erie Insurance Selects Cambridge Mobile Telematics for Young Driver Program

New rewards-based program to help educate and encourage safe driving habits among the youngest generation of drivers
November 6, 2018

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Erie Insurance launched a program using technology from Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT) to teach its youngest users smart driving behaviors.

With CMT’s DriveWell platform and in-vehicle IoT device, the DriveWell Tag, ERIE’s customers can now monitor their driving behaviors– such as distracted driving, speeding and hard braking – and receive in-app driving tips. ERIE also offers a rewards element to the program; providing gift card incentives to drivers who improve their behaviors and maintain safer driving scores.

“We’re proactively trying to help the next generation of drivers develop a lifetime of safe-driving habits using technology that they are already comfortable with,” said Jon Bloom, vice president of product management at Erie Insurance. “CMT has shown that their solutions can positively impact driving behavior, lowering overall claims cost and – most importantly – making the roads safer.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, teens are the largest age group reported as distracted at the time of fatal crashes. In 2015, 3,477 people were killed and 391,000 were injured in crashes involving distracted drivers.

“We all could be better drivers, but by forming safe driving habits early, we can create safer roads for everyone,” said Katherine Wellman, vice president of product & marketing at CMT. “By combining low-cost, easy-to-use technology with a rewards-based program, families will be able to observe areas for driving improvement and teens who are just starting to form driving habits will have the best chance of being better drivers for life.”

ERIE launched the program for customers in Ohio and West Virginia in May 2018.
