Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT) develops mobile applications that make roads and drivers safer around the world!
We work on problems like these:

  • Inferring vehicular dynamics and trajectories using sensor data from a mobile phone
  • Automatic drive detection, activity detection, driver/passenger classification
  • Detecting and discouraging distracted driving
  • Quantifying safe vs. risky driving characteristics
  • Detecting and responding to crashes and accidents in real-time
  • Mobile app visualization, feedback, & incentives to improve a user’s driving
  • Scaling our cloud infrastructure for a unique sensor-intensive workload

We are seeking top-notch Android developers to help us build beautiful, engaging apps that help drivers improve their driving abilities and pay less for their insurance. The apps are central to obtaining the sensor data and, more importantly, to changing driver behavior to make roads safer.

CMT is a spin-off from MIT’s CarTel project (Professors Balakrishnan and Madden). Its team members have developed products at Akamai, Analog Devices, Google, Nokia, Quanta,, and Wayfair, and have conducted research at MIT, Berkeley, Harvard, UCLA, and Olin. Our mobile apps and hardware are used by millions of drivers around the world, including in the US, Canada, Europe, South Africa, Australia, and Brazil.

Our users receive instant, customized feedback, making them safer drivers and lowering their insurance rates. Many of them also get real-time roadside assistance using our crash detection system. Note that our engineering team ranges from recent graduates to experienced PhDs. Your role in this position can be tailored to your level of experience and particular areas of focus.

Data Scientist

Cambridge, MA

As a Data Scientist on our data team, you would handle a diverse set of problems, ranging from probabilistic inference on phone trajectories, data fusion between noisy sensors, modeling and classification of driving behavior, and data visualization.  Given the scale of data involved, many of the experiments run in the cloud.

Your role:

  • Understanding data flow in a large, distributed system
  • Designing, coding and executing data investigations
  • Performing robust statistical analyses
  • Producing internal presentations, customer reports and visualizations to summarize the conclusions

Required Skills:

  • Masters or PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field
  • 3+ years performing data analysis on real world data
  • Strong programming skills for constructing and understanding data pipelines, particularly in Python (scipy/numpy) and SQL
  • Experience with modern/emerging scalable computing platforms and languages (e.g. Spark)

Your role:
