MIT CSAIL app tracks, rates drivers’ skills

Arguments over whether Massachusetts or New York has the worst drivers can now be settled with hard data.

A new app called EverDrive, developed by MIT CSAIL researchers Hari Balakrishnan and Sam Madden and launched this month by Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT) and their partner, EverQuote, measures users’ speed, acceleration, hard turning, harsh braking and phone distractions while driving. With the app launch, CMT is holding a competition between users in Massachusetts and New York to settle the age-old rivalry over which state has the most reckless drivers, according to developers.

Between now and June, EverDrive users in Massachusetts and New York can compete for $50,000 in cash and a $10,000 prize to the user with the safest driver rating. The state determined to have the most unsafe drivers will be announced in June. Full Article
