Here’s how to find out if you’re ‘Boston’s Safest Driver’ [Boston.com]

October 6, 2016

Attention Boston area drivers: This is your chance to prove yourself on the road.

Mayor Marty Walsh has launched Boston’s Safest Driver Competition, in which drivers can compete for upward of $9,000 in weekly prizes through a smartphone-based app that measures safe driving practices, the mayor’s office said in a statement Monday.

Starting now until December 3, users can download the “Boston’s Safest Driver” app and compete to win one of a dozen weekly prizes for achievements like having the top score or taking alternative modes of transportation, according to the mayor’s office. Participants can challenge their friends and look at how they rank in their community, too.

“Our top priority is creating streets that are safe for Boston’s pedestrians, cyclists and drivers,” Walsh said. “We know that when drivers are more attentive, we save lives, and this new competition is a fun way to encourage drivers to use more caution when traveling on our streets.”

The app, developed by Cambridge Mobile Telematics, logs trips in the background of users’ smartphones. Drivers are then given a score and tips to improve their driving after each trip, according to the mayor’s office.
